TA achievements

2. TAs offer greater access to publishers’ subscription content

“Open access makes it easier for our population to access information, because in most instances our institutions have financial constraints in actually subscribing to various journals because of the cost. This agreement has made it easier for our users to access information.”

Luyolo Matabeni, Senior Librarian, Nelson Mandela University

Access to the “read” component of TAs has been a key driver in many partners’ decisions to adopt TAs. In South Africa, SANLiC’s consortium members now enable their researchers to access a vast catalogue of peer-reviewed research, much of which was previously unavailable due to financial constraints.

Across all three case studies, the usage of subscription content under the “read” portion of agreements increased by as much as 24% in the first year, demonstrating value for members. Partial data for 2024 indicates that these agreements will further exceed the number of article requests recorded before the start of the TA (Fig. 3).
