Partnerships and collaboration
Working together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable research environment

Our open access (OA) strategy is predominantly driven by transformative agreements (TAs) and the expansion of full OA journals. Underpinning this, however, are partnerships.
Continued advancement requires coordinated efforts across the scholarly ecosystem. This includes addressing disparities in funding, infrastructure, and OA literacy, particularly in regions where OA adoption is still emerging.
Working together we can better enable a more inclusive OA environment, ensuring that solutions are tailored to support each partner, region, institution – enabling OA adoption to scale at a pace suitable to their unique circumstances.
Four case studies showing how this can be achieved
Adapting to partner needs, driving equity and impact for all: Lyrasis
An expanded agreement with Lyrasis, a non-profit member organisation working globally to serve libraries and other institutions, covers some 120 institutions and includes eight Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) benefitting from greater access to articles. In order to access opportunities, researchers need to be exposed to specific content. Generally speaking, HBCUs have not had such access. This TA is important in allowing these schools to begin building up their publishing impact, ensuring we continue to drive equity, increase readership and author visibility, and foster collaborative research that delivers solutions to pressing issues.

“It’s benefiting our students and faculty members across the board at HBCUs. It’s giving us an opportunity where we’ve been shut out for so long and not been able to present our ideas in a new format. So I think it’s groundbreaking for us.”
Community outreach - Springer Nature India Research Tour and celebrating 20 years of Springer journal partnerships in China

Prof. Dhananjay Singh
Member Secretary, ICSSR
“This initiative brings vital resources, knowledge, and global best practices directly to researchers across the country, empowering them to contribute meaningfully to both national and international academic dialogues.”
The Springer Nature India Research Tour is a nationwide initiative, to engage with the Indian research community and foster open dialogue on key issues like OA. The tour, organised in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and the Ministry of Education, visits numerous educational institutions and universities across the country. It aims to raise awareness, promote best practices, and support researchers, particularly early career and women researchers.

“Connecting in person, via events like the one with our editors in China, is key for us across Springer and our other portfolios. We are proud of our long-lasting partnerships and the successful collaboration with our academic societies, universities and editors. It ensures that as we continue to move towards our shared goals of OA, we do so as partners, with the same goals and passion for progress.”
Enduring, trusted partnerships are essential to ensuring all researchers have a platform to share their work. They also enable us, as a publisher, to remain responsive to the evolving needs of the global research community. Our 20-year Springer journal partnership event in Shanghai where we had the opportunity to celebrate our partners and discuss regional specific changes, exemplifies this commitment.
Working with societies to support a sustainable approach to OA
Society partnerships are a central part of supporting a long-term, sustainable approach to OA for all researchers. By combining editorial expertise, global reach, and innovative publishing platforms, we can drive greater alignment across policies, resources, and product development. This not only strengthens a sustainable OA strategy for all but also accelerates progress across the global research ecosystem.
Today, we partner with 800+ leading societies worldwide, publishing 1,200+ journals — including the prestigious EMBO Press suite, which launched on Springer Nature Link in January 2024.

Fiona Watt
Director, EMBO
“We chose Springer Nature because it best meets our needs at a time when science publishing is in considerable flux. EMBO Press has been consistently innovative since its inception, and we have chosen a publisher that will not only help us grow but also facilitate widespread adoption of the open science activities that we have piloted successfully.”
